Singapore may be an expensive city, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in ‘cheap’ thrills. If summer break’s got you scrambling for fun things to do without having to spend a lot of money — then check out our list of 6 free things to do in Singapore during the school holidays.

01 • Embrace nature at the Chek Jawa Wetlands

Looking for the perfect nature getaway that has everything from beaches to mangroves? Then look no further than the Chek Jawa Wetlands! This incredible location combines six different natural habitats in one spot: it’s got a sandy beach, rocky beach, coral rubble, seagrass lagoon, coastal forest, and mangroves.

There are two separate boardwalks you can take to explore the various natural habitats. And if you’re a birdwatcher, prepare to be amazed by the 7-metre-high Jejawi Tower, offering a bird’s eye view of the entire island.

If heights aren’t your thing, fear not! House no.1 is a delightful spot too. Originally built in the 1930s by a British chief surveyor named Landon Williams, this Tudor-style cottage now serves as a visitor centre where you can learn the history of the island.

Just remember to bring your hats and sunscreen along because it’s going to be a hot, but fun day out for the whole family!

02 • Take a walk along Fort Canning Park

Tucked away in the heart of the city lies Fort Canning Park, a little patch of green amidst a sea of concrete. Surprisingly, this serene park holds fragments of history scattered throughout its premises. With its lush greenery and countless Instagram-worthy spots, Fort Canning offers a refreshing escape from the city’s hustle and bustle, even if it’s just for a few hours.

Seeking a jaw-dropping Facebook profile picture? Make your way to the spiral staircase and start clicking. The striking contrast between the rocky stairs and the towering green trees will make your friends wonder if you’re a supermodel caught in a secret jungle photoshoot!

After some satisfying exploration, it’s time to reward yourself (and your family) with a delightful dinner at Clarke Quay — you’ve earned it!

03 • Go museum hopping

These June holidays 2025, escape the turbulent Singapore weather and step into cool, air-conditioned spaces packed with stories, sights, and surprises. Museums in Singapore aren’t the dusty, “no touching” kind — think hands-on activities, immersive exhibits, and plenty of kid-friendly action.

Got little explorers with you? Make a beeline for the Children’s Museum Singapore. It’s tailor-made for kids 12 and under, with educational multimedia, engaging exhibits, and free storytelling sessions.

For a trip back in time, the Asian Civilisations Museum delivers a treasure trove of experience. Apart from their stunning exhibitions, the “Let’s Learn About…” online series spotlights a new theme each month, with scavenger hunts, online games, and cute activity booklets to keep young minds buzzing even at home.

Another favourite is the Keppel Centre for Art Education, housed within the National Gallery. There are 8 all-new interactive zones where kids can dive into art through play, creativity, and full-on sensory fun. The vibrant rooms are inspired by real artworks, and you’ll even find digital canvases to doodle on. The Makers Studio is a must-visit, where you can dabble in 3D doodling and build wooden sculptures and art of your own.

04 • Picnic at Marina Barrage

Why overcomplicate things when you can stick to the classics and have an amazing time? That’s why a picnic with your loved ones is the perfect choice! And what better place to enjoy it than Marina Barrage, where you’ll be treated to stunning views of the city’s skyscrapers and the iconic Marina Bay Sands.

Getting ready for the occasion is a breeze — just whip up some delicious homemade food, pack it all in a cute basket (because aesthetics matter, ya know!), grab your trusty picnic mat, and head on down to Marina Barrage. But wait, there’s more! You can spice things up by bringing along your favourite games like Monopoly, Twister, and more.

Feeling artsy? Bring your paint-by-numbers kit and unleash your inner Rembrandt as you paint the night away. So, gather your loved ones and get ready for a delightful picnic experience that’ll create lasting memories for you to cherish!

05 • Discover Singapore’s cultural landmarks

Living in Singapore means being surrounded by a melting pot of cultures. With stunning temples, mosques, and churches, you don’t need a passport to go on a spiritual world tour — just some comfy shoes and some sunblock.

Kick things off in Little India, home to Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. It’s one of the oldest temples in Singapore and is filled with intricate sculptures and bold colours that represent the vibrant Hindu culture.

Next, head over to Thian Kock Keng Temple, an architectural gem built without nails. This Hokkien masterpiece is only held together by pure craftsmanship. Not only that, but it’s also the oldest and most important Taoist temple in Singapore and is a must-visit landmark.

Don’t forget to swing by Kampong Glam to check out the iconic Masjid Sultan. With its arresting golden dome and Arab street backdrop, this religious monument is stunning, tranquil, and packed with stories. It’s also surrounded by delicious halal restaurants, which is a great way to appreciate the culture. Last but not least, on this curated landmark trail is St Andrew’s Cathedral nestled in the Civic District. It’s Singapore’s oldest Anglican church, with a crisp white exterior, soaring spires, and gorgeous stained glass windows. Stop by to take a breather and bask in some serious serenity while appreciating its beauty.

06 • Tour a real fire station on Saturdays

(Photo: Little Day Out)

Want to feel like a real-life hero for a day? These June holidays 2025, head down to one of Singapore’s fire stations for a behind-the-scenes peek at what our SCDF firefighters are up to. Open to both kids and adults (yes, you can live your firefighter dreams too), the visit includes an intro to the fascinating emergency vehicles and lifesaving equipment they carry.

Watch in awe as the firefighters demonstrate how they suit up in full protective gear and show off the powerful tools and tech they use on the job — trust me, it’s not as easy as it looks. And of course, your day wouldn’t be complete without a chance to snap some pics with the fire trucks to post on the ‘gram.

07 • Enjoy a movie by the beach

Move night but make it beachy? Count me in! For interesting films, fresh air, and good vibes, Sentosa’s Movies by the Beach is the place to be. Held at Palawan Kidz City Roof Garden, this dreamy cinema experience is free and perfect for bonding with the family.

The movies are screened every weekend, with regularly rotating lineups, so keep an eye out for any films on your wishlist and catch them here. Remember to pack some snacks to munch on during the show. 😋

08 • Explore Mandai
