Have you ever found yourself driving down a road, when all of a sudden, a blurry figure of a car zooms by at seemingly supersonic speed? Speeding is no joke and it puts lives in danger. The Ministry of Home Affairs recently announced that demerit points and fines for speeding offences will increase from 1 January 2026.
What are demerit points and composition fines?
Demerit points and composition fines are enforced as part of the Driver Improvement Points System (DIPS). They aim to deter dangerous driving through rewards and penalties.
Depending on the severity of the traffic offence, drivers may receive anywhere from 3 to 24 demerit points. Accumulating 24 demerit points within 24 months will result in a suspension of your licence. But of course, you should try to avoid accumulating any demerit points at all.

*The composition fines mentioned in this table only apply to light vehicles, which are vehicles driven with Class 2B/2A/2, or 3C/3/3CA/3A licence. Learn more about the different driving licence classes.
These harsher speeding penalties go to show how dangerous it is to exceed the speed limit. So, as always, drive safely for yourself, your loved ones and your wallet, and other road users.
See you on the road,
