Nothing beats some savoury, golden prata on lazy Sunday morning. As a kid, I loved coating it in copious amounts of sugar, enjoying the sweet crunch of the crystals against the greasy fluffy dough. And almost as a rite of passage, every child graduates from the sugar phase into appreciating the aromatic and flavourful curries that come with the prata.

Prata isn’t just breakfast; it's a late-night supper saviour, a quick lunch fix, and the ultimate vessel for soaking up delicious curry. This versatile dish has travelled from the Indian subcontinent, adopted and perfected by local hands, and innovated into a dazzling array of choices. From the classic kosong (plain) and egg to wild creations like the Murtaburger or even ice cream prata.

Choosing a favourite prata place is like picking a favourite child, but as an expert overthinker, I’ve managed to narrow down my top ten spots in Singapore. Now that I’ve solidified my list, it’s time to impart my knowledge to some fellow foodies. So get your curry-dipping fingers ready, because here is my list of unmissable Roti Prata joints!

01 • Mr and Mrs Mohgan's Super Crispy Roti Prata

(Photo: Today Online)

Trust me when I say this, this prata place is worth waking up for. Tucked away in an old-school kopitiam in Joo Chiat, this stall has achieved cult status amongst foodies. And true to its name, this is where you go for the crispiest prata. Its thin and crunchy exterior hides a steamy fluffy dough which is delightfully soft and satisfying to eat.

Although the slightly salty and sweet prata is absolutely delicious on its own, not pairing it with fragrant curries would be an absolute travesty. Mr and Mrs Mohgan offers both fish and mutton curries that have just the right amount of spice to give that burst of flavour without overpowering the prata. It’s an absolutely beautiful pairing so head down and give it a go.

02 • Sin Ming Roti Prata

If you’re the kind of person who believes good things come in small, coin-shaped packages, then get yourself over to Sin Ming Road. This place is legendary for its Coin Prata set, small, circular, and magnificently flaky pieces of dough that practically beg to be dipped.

The croissant-like dough is crispy on the outside but has layers that flake apart effortlessly.  They make the dough in-house, cooking each piece to order so it comes to you piping hot and fresh. Pair the coin pratas with their tender mutton curry for a satisfying meal, or go for the traditional egg prata for something both crispy and chewy.

If you’re feeling adventurous and want more excitement than the usual flavours, Springleaf is your answer. While they still offer classics, they're really famous for their crazy, fusion creations. Being the OGs of prata innovation, you can find truly unique dishes here like the Umami 50  – a combo of luncheon meat, cheese, chicken floss, and egg – or the Prata Alfredo, which is a decadent creamy and cheesy Italian fusion prata.

Having multiple outlets, including a 24-hour one at NEWest, it's become a popular supper spot for youngsters looking for a late night hang-out. If you've got a group of friends who can never agree on what to eat, Springleaf Prata can be your perfect go-to eatery .

04 • Casuarina Curry

(Photo: Tidbits Mag)

When I need a quick good old prata fix, I know I can always rely on Casuarina Curry for some crispy and cushiony pratas. As one of the most famous prata chains in Singapore, they’re known for their light flaky pratas that never misses.

Purists can dive into their excellent plain, egg, or onion pratas, or you can get experimental with their innovative items like the Ondeh-Ondeh Prata at their MacPherson outlet. This creation is nothing short of a work of art – prata shaped into a bowl, carrying a creamy coconut ice cream, topped with grated coconut, pandan jelly cubes, and a generous drizzle of gula melaka syrup. It’s definitely one of my irresistible guilty pleasures.

05 • Thasevi Food Famous Jalan Kayu Prata Restaurant

(Photo: Tripadvisor)

A list of Singapore’s best prata spots would be incomplete without a mention of the famous Jalan Kayu stretch. This place is an institution and a must-visit for classic prata lovers. The pratas here are thin, crispy, and the dough is fried to a beautiful golden-brown without being overly oily.

For the ultimate authentic experience, go for the classic Egg Prata and drown it in their amazing fish curry. It’s a no-frills experience that reminds you why prata is a Singaporean staple.

06 • R.K. Eating House

(Photo: The Straits Times)

A true supper institution, R.K. Eating House in Serangoon Gardens is famous for two things: their addictively crispy prata and their absolutely enormous Tissue Prata. Seriously, this tower of sugar-coated, paper-thin dough is a behemoth and you'll need at least two friends to conquer it, perfect as a bonding activity.

You can’t go wrong with their regular pratas, but if you want to indulge, the R.K. Prata Special will take care of that. Prata, curries, sambal sauce, and 2 half-boiled eggs piled messily into a sky-high plate, this dish will really take you on a ride. With a cacophony of flavours and textures fighting for the limelight in your mouth, it’s a chaotic but hearty dish everyone needs to try at least once.

The place runs 24-hours, so you can literally satisfy your cravings round the clock. It's a great option if you find yourself with those 2am hunger pangs.

07 • Rahmath Cheese Prata

(Photo: Miss Tam Chiak)

If you’re a devout follower of the cheese cult, this is your pilgrimage. Rahmath Cheese Prata is a hidden gem for those who prefer a doughier and softer prata, making it the perfect pocket for loads of melty cheese. Viscous melty cheese oozing out the stuffed prata, it’s a rich and decadent meal that’s not for the faint of heart.

They also serve a potent, mouthwatering mutton curry that many regulars swear by. The spicy acidic sauces cut through the heaviness of the cheese, balancing out the richness perfectly. It’s the ultimate comfort meal, a true hug-in-a-dish that you’ll be thinking about days later.

08 • Julaiha Muslim Restaurant

(Photo: Miss Tam Chiak)

For the East-siders who love a good, old-school late-night meal, Julaiha Muslim Restaurant is a favourite supper spot along MacPherson Road. The pratas here managed to find the perfect combination of crispy but doughy and chewy on the inside. So if you’re looking for a denser and more substantial meal that’ll fill you up, this is the place for you.

Their Chicken Murtabak is another dish that I’d highly recommend. Stuffed to the brim with ingredients, the generous portions spilling out of the murtabak was really quite impressive. If you want to eat to your heart's content, this dish will absolutely accomplish that.

09 • ENAQ The Prata Shop

(Photo: Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore)

West-siders, I haven’t forgotten about you! ENAQ is a prata stall nestled under the void deck of an unassuming cluster of HDB blocks in Jurong East. This family-owned stall is championed by locals for having some of the crispiest prata in the West. Their plain prata is a steal, priced at $1.20 per piece, and their Prata Plaster – prata with a soft-yolked egg cooked right on top – is done perfectly.

Tear off a piece of the classic plain prata and you’ll feel the satisfying shatter of the ultra-thin, almost papery crisp exterior. Taste-wise, the dough carries a lovely, subtle buttery richness with a hint of salty sweetness that makes you want to keep reaching for more. Especially when you soak up the rich, slightly spicy fish or mutton curry they serve. If you're a westie who hasn’t stumbled upon this gem, or if you’re out in the wild wild west for the day, this is your mandatory prata pit stop.

10 • Curry Cafe

(Photo: Yahoo Lifestyle Singapore)

This place has become a casual and quick breakfast staple for residents. It’s usually packed in the mornings so you can avoid the crowd by coming here for a laid-back brunch date. It’s an affordable eatery with a healthy selection of food, and their pratas and curries are a great bang for your buck.

The prata itself is light and crispy, perfectly designed to be the sponge for these rich liquids. The thick and creamy curry coats the palate with layers of flavour — from the warmth of the spices to the slight tangy, sour kick that keeps you coming back for another dip. It’s an addictive meal and should be a mandatory stop on any prata-lover's road trip.
