Recently, my supervisor shot me in the back and stole a coveted vaccine that I was protecting for the sake of world peace. Okay, he shot me with a paintball, but that doesn’t make the betrayal any less painful!
After that harrowing experience, I ended up going down a rabbit hole of Singaporean and Malaysian paintball articles, only to come out more confused than I was before. This easy-to-digest guide was created to help ease paintball newbies into the activity without throwing every single buzzword at their faces.
If you think paintball is for you, read on, because your epic journey starts here 🔫
What to bring for your first sesh

All paintballers, whether they’re casuals and veterans, should bring ample water, insect repellent, a towel, and a change of clothes to their paintball events. I seriously regretted not bringing a towel to wipe away my sweat after playing 😵💫 I think everyone was side-eying me on the bus ride home.
As for the actual battle attire, long sleeves and pants are recommended to protect your skin from potential bruising. Make sure to wear clothes that are easy to move around in, because you’re gonna be doing a lot of running. Closed-toe shoes are a must.
You’ll need to sign waivers before you get to play, so make sure to bring your ID and any signed forms requested by the instructors. The latter is especially important as different places have different requirements (some need to be emailed, some need to be printed out). Double-check with the company if you’re unsure.
The best thing about paintball is that most places rent out the gear, but if you’re thinking about playing frequently, having your own equipment could save you lots of money.
Stores like Black Tactical, Lone Wolf, and Paintballers World sell high-quality helmets and chest armour if you’re willing to pay extra. If not, check Carousell or Amazon for more affordable options.

Tips for battle

- The mask stays ON. Even if you need to desperately scratch an itch under your eye, just suck it up and leave it be. Seriously. Leave the mask on.
- When the match starts, find a good place to hide. If bunkers are available, hide in a corner or around the edges. Don’t put your back against anything, it hinders your movement.
- Don’t crowd with teammates. The only time you and teammates should all be together is before the match when you’re strategising, or at the end when you’ve won/lost.
- When running, do it quick and do it low. You could army crawl if you want, but it’s not particularly fast.
- Keep your elbows tucked in. If they stick out too much, they might end up a target for enemies. If you don’t have elbow pads on, you’re cooked, so keep them close to your body.
- I know we all want to be the next Rambo or Master Chief, but a paintball gun is not a real gun so don’t aim it like one. Just point in the general direction of an opponent’s torso and fire. No headshots!
- For moving targets, shoot where they’re going and not where they are.
- Don’t get mad. Yes, it’s an insurmountable task, I know, but being angry while holding a gun can lead to awful (or painful) situations, so let your anger go and get’em next time.
- The most important part: play hard but play fair. Have fun!
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the age requirement for paintball?
Requirements vary from place to place, but most establishments allow the ages 16 and up to take part. Check with the instructors if you plan on bringing children under 16. Parental consent forms must be signed for minors to play.
Where can I buy a personal paintball gun?
Although it doesn’t shoot bullets, paintball guns are treated like proper firearms in the eyes of the law. You cannot buy or own one without permission from the government.
Does getting shot hurt?
Depends on your pain tolerance. For some, it feels like snapping a rubber band against your skin. Personally, it hurts less when I shoot the other guy first 😉
See you guys on the field!
