Being constantly hailed as a vanguard of innovation and technology leaves Singapore with some big shoes to fill. That is, perhaps, why they decided to roll out the golden-child of projects, Punggol Digital District (PDD). Envisioned as a real-life sandbox for a smart, sustainable, and convenient lifestyle, this district has much to live up to. Powered with technologies that could fulfill a tech nerd’s raunchiest dream, this 50-hectare zone sets the stage for a newer and better way of life for the everyday Singaporean.

To be embarrassingly transparent, when it comes to technology I’m in fact as lost as a sock in a dryer. The current infatuation for digitalisation at times leaves me bewildered and isolated. If you feel the same, don’t worry! As a fellow tech noob, I did the research and I’m here to let you know exactly what it is, and what to expect.

What’s so special about the PDD and how it works

Think of this district as Singapore upgrading its Operating System. Arguably bringing us closer to the fiction of Wall-E, this district is run by centralised and automated systems for cleaning, waste disposal, temperature regulation, building access and more, relieving the need for mundane manual labour. Say hi to the cleaning robots as you dine on spotless surfaces at the hawker center, or thank the surveillance robots as you leave your bag unattended to chope the perfect seating spot.

Championing sustainability, this smart city is also built to optimise efficiency and minimizing environmental impact. Que their Car Lite feature. Feeling trapped by the incessant blare of busy traffic and unpleasant sight of grey asphalt roads? PDD’s car lite feature solves this with an extensive underground infrastructure that accommodates main roads, vehicular access, and carparks. This allows for open areas and lush greenery amidst the futuristic buildings, making it an ideal and comfortable hang out spot for friends and family.

How it works

Co-developed by GovTech and JTC, the “backbone” of PDD Open Digital Platform (ODP) runs the district like a no-nonsense military commander. Armed with complex algorithms, it integrates different systems to operate the district seamlessly, while simultaneously collecting real-time data which students, researchers, and developers utilise to further enhance this new infrastructure.

For the average Punggolian, this means you will always be a step ahead of the population in experiencing the hottest and trendiest new tech. Plus, the PDD digital twin — a real-time, 3D virtual replica of the entire district — is an additional safety-net to prevent technical bugs from disrupting operations. Sounds like sci-fi, but it's no fiction!

Job opportunities

Beyond the sparkling new tech to nerd out on, what does PDD have to offer a young adult? This budding metropolis provides ample opportunities for partnerships and collaborations with global firms and companies. This is set to create an estimated 28,000 jobs, focusing on high-growth industries. Whether you’re a fresh grad, looking for a career switch, or simply wanting fresh new opportunities, this is where you want to be.

Academia

Furnished with industry-leading technologies, PDD makes an ideal environment for academia. Unsurprisingly, Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) campus is integrated into the district with research labs and learning facilities strategically located within a stone’s throw from the business park buildings. Future university students, get ready to experience an ease of access to learning opportunities and internships that would turn all your predecessors green with envy.

As the first wave of tenants start trickling into this soon-to-be North-East epicenter, the PDD is slowly being brought to life with eateries and activities that the public can enjoy. Here are some things you can do at the PDD as you experience the future unfold in real-time.

Punggol Coast Mall

Just a short distance from the Punggol Coast MRT, this conveniently located mall is a one-stop shop for all your food, fashion, health, and lifestyle needs. This integrated mall is designed to be the PDD's social nucleus, a sleek, modern common ground where tech professionals, students, and residents converge.

Enjoy some lighthearted and meaningful fun times at the Comics and Games Library opened by NLB. With a collection of around 7000 comic books and games, this place can keep you entertained for hours. Punggol Heritage Trail

(Photo: The Straits Times)

While the PDD is all about looking forward, the Punggol Heritage Trial provides a much needed escape from the action. Deliberately preserving its original undulating terrain and rustic greenery, it's a subtle nod to the area’s past life as a transport route for fishermen and farmers.

As you meander down the trail, you'll encounter historical elements, including an old-school orange-and-white bus stop that now serves as a quaint rest spot. It's the perfect spot for a meditative run or a sunset walk that captures the neighbourhood's simpler past, making it the essential analog reflection amidst the district's digital buzz.
