After 50 million dollars and almost 3 years, City Square Mall is fully back in business! The old food court on Level 4 is now bigger and better as Gastro Square, with some truly amazing international restaurants. But that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing else in City Square Mall for you to try — there are some hidden gems on the other levels, too. We’ve compiled all of them right here for your next big foodie adventure.
01 • Xiao Jiao Tian

This is one of the most popular restaurants in Gastro Square right now, and for good reason! With more than 80 outlets across China, Xiao Jiao Tian has just made its Singapore debut right here in City Square Mall. They specialise in Sichuan cuisine, made using less oil and spice to suit local tastes. Out of their 4 signature dishes, the Bullfrog with Pickled Chilli ($39.90) is certainly the most unique — it’s a lighter and more tender version of chicken meat, in a spicy and sour soup that hits just right.

02 • Gyushi

With Gyushi, Wagyu beef doesn’t have to break the bank. Their signature Wagyu Beef Dons hover around the $15 mark while still delivering delicious, full-bodied flavour. The Mentaiko Wagyu Beef Bowl (M $16.8 / L $18.8) features a rich and creamy homemade mentaiko sauce drizzled on flame-torched Wagyu beef that simply melts in your mouth. It’s a hearty and satisfying meal, perfect after a long day of work or school.

03 • Super Dario Lasagne Cafe

Pasta and pizza places are popular, but a lasagne-only restaurant is definitely rare. Super Dario Lasagne Cafe (and yes, the founder’s name is actually Dario!) boasts an astonishing range of 15 lasagnes, all with different meats and cheeses, as well as vegetarian and vegan options. Power up with their signature Super Dario Lasagne ($14.90) layered with beef and mozzarella cheese, and top it off with a classic Italian dessert of Panna Cotta ($6.90) or Tartufo Ice Cream ($6.90).

04 • Kok Sen Restaurant

I confess, I honestly didn’t think a zi char restaurant could win a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Kok Sen Restaurant does not only that, but has consistently done so for the past 8 years, which is absolutely bonkers. They’re attracting big crowds in Gastro Square right now, having finally expanded from their flagship outlet in Chinatown.
Their signature Golden Dragon Chicken ($35) features fried chicken skin layered with prawn and squid paste, sizzled to crispy perfection. Another banger is the Big Prawn Noodles Soup ($20 / $40 / $60), a family favourite consisting of large juicy prawns and thick rice noodles.

He’s prepared dishes for big names like Prince William and Barack Obama, and now he’s bringing them to Singapore for the very first time. Their extensive menu has more than 60 delectable dishes, with the Traditional Hanoi Soup Chicken Pho ($12.50) being especially popular for its rich bone broth.

One of the leading Hunan restaurant chains in China, Nong Geng Ji, has now set its sights on Singapore. While they’ve been compared to Xiang Xiang Cuisine, Nong Geng Ji sets itself apart with its uncompromising authenticity (ALL the spice, ALL the oil, ALL the deliciousness) and unique innard dishes. Their signature Stir-Fried Pork with Abalone and Chilli ($28.80) is a fragrant combination of Fujian abalones and Hunan hot screw peppers, served on a mini flame for maximum freshness.

07 • i Mango

i Mango is a local Singaporean brand putting a healthy twist on all your favourite treats — shaved ice desserts, fresh milk teas, and egg waffles that are “Half the Sugar, Twice the Health”! Their treats are all made with pure milk and real fruit, making for a naturally refreshing delight. One Google Review even claims that they’re better than Chagee, which is pretty high praise.
With a bright yellow storefront, they’re definitely hard to miss. Try their equally yellow (and iconic) Mango Milk Cotton Ice at $11.90 for a medium and $15.90 for a large.

08 • Aunt MyeongDong

There’s nothing better than a good ol’ buffet. Aunt MyeongDong offers a delicious Korean BBQ buffet with free-flow sides and a hotpot-style condiment station. But it’s not just your average buffet! All their meals are expertly crafted by a head chef with over 40 years of experience in Busan, giving you a truly authentic experience.
If you’re spoilt for choice, you can opt for their equally popular classic Korean dishes. One of their most raved-about dishes is the Marinated Crab in Chilli Sauce ($26.90), a spicy and umami delight.

09 • Mei Heong Yuen Dessert

Mei Heong Yuen Dessert is a Chinatown Heritage Brand that serves both hot and cold traditional Chinese desserts like milk pudding, herbal jelly, and glutinous rice. Their owner is actually related to the founder of Farmer Brand peanuts, an iconic old-school snack. It’s no wonder, then, that their signature Peanut Paste ($4) is adored for its silky and rich taste. Their wide range of snow ice desserts is especially popular as well — creamy but not too sweet.

10 • Talad Thai Banana

Everyone’s had the classic fried banana fritter from a local hawker stall, but Talad Thai Banana elevates that simple treat to the next level. The secret? Thai Nam Wa bananas and an authentic Thai batter recipe. Nam Wa bananas, in particular, are sweet and tangy without the astringency of regular bananas. Fried to crispy golden goodness and topped with sesame seeds for added crunch, Talad Thai’s Fried Banana Fritters (6 for $5 / 8 for $6) are the perfect snack on the go.
