Last time I talked about vintage items, the article became an unexpected hit. After a lot of digging and researching, I came up with a brilliant hypothesis: Singaporeans love retro things. To see if my theory is correct, I visited tons of vintage stores — and whaddya know, I saw Singaporeans of all ages having the time of their lives thrifting and buying antiquated items. If you wanna see what’s got everyone so hooked on retro goods, I’ve curated a list of the most unique vintage stores in Singapore. Who knows, you might find a one-of-a-kind trinket on your hunt 😉

01 • Cherry Lane Records

(Photo: Jason Arvin Tan)

My friend gave high praise to this store in Joo Chiat, so I decided to do some “boots on the ground journalism” and checked it out. On top of the awesome cosy ambience, they have a good selection of rock, jazz, local, and non-English records. The staff here even let you play vinyls without pressuring you to buy them. If you don’t own a record player, the store boasts a strong selection of CDs, cassettes, clothes, and accessories. There’s something for everyone!

‍

💸 What I got here: I was able to snag a used CD of Barrington Levy’s Original Ragga Muffin ($23). Black Roses is by far my favourite Reggae song of all time so I was really happy to find it here 🥰

02 • VintageWKND

VintageWKND stands out, not just in Haji Lane but also country-wide, as a pioneer of sustainable fashion.

The majority of their fashion arsenal is upcycled from pre-loved fabrics. Their newest collection “Cottagecloth” is entirely composed of old tapestries, tablecloths, and curtains. Even the outfits made from quote-unquote “lower-quality fabrics” look like they were pulled straight from a Harajuku boutique. The clothes are pricier, but I consider it a well-deserved investment to support Singapore’s sustainability movement 👗 ✨

‍

💸 What I got here: I bought a lacey 2-tone purple cami ($35) and a light yellow hachi tier cake skirt ($55). The sales assistant gave me lots of recommendations on how to pair different tops and bottoms, so I might go back just to yap about layering and colour theory.

03 • By My Old School

(Photo: Nee Girando)

Walking into this store felt like entering a time capsule. A lot of vintage stores tend to have items from the 70s or 80s onwards, but By My Old School has trinkets from the 1930s. That’s almost one hundred years ago 😵‍💫 I think I started having an existential crisis while looking at the Kopitiam memorabilia because I recognised a bunch from my childhood. If one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, then one man’s innovation is another man’s antique... oh man…  😪

04 • Wing Antiques & Collectibles

(Photo: Dillinger Lee)

If you’re a fan of treasure-hunting, you might enjoy Wing Antiques more than properly organised vintage shops.

Expect a very intense rummage session while you’re here. Like sleeves to your elbow, hunching over a dusty crate, knees aching, kind of rummaging. Some curious things I found here include: an early version of 3D spectacles from Cathay Theatre, sewing machine toys, old-school idol photo cards, and a vintage steering wheel 🛞 Expect A LOT of dust, so bring a mask if you have a sensitive nose.

‍

💸 What I got here: I bought a vintage St Patrick’s School Badge ($25) for my Dad. He was a little insulted because I bought a much older variant. He thought I was subtly calling him old 😂

📍 Address: 2 Havelock Rd, #03-27/28, Singapore 059763

05 • The Née Vintage Store

(Photo: Kai)

Okay, hear me out: if you’ve heard of this store before, then you probably know that they sell luxury goods. But look, we’ve all got that one person in our life that we wanna spoil with nice things, right? Personally, it’s my Mum, so a place like The Née Vintage Store is a GODSEND to me. My Mum loves Louis Vuitton, and where else can I get a discontinued Louis Vuitton bag for the low price of $1,280? With minimal wear and tear, mind you. So give this place a shot if you can, because everyone should have the chance to enjoy the finer things in life 💖

06 • Red Point Record Warehouse

(Photo: Red Point Record Warehouse)

This is another record store that my friend recommended, and she says it has a much larger variety of vinyls to pick from compared to other shops.

More records means more time spent flipping through crates, but more options also means a higher chance to find The One. You know what I mean. The store also boasts a decent selection of electronic and battery-operated equipment. You want a SONY Walkman? The store sells one for under $100? Need a portable cassette recorder to play your favourite jams on the go? Red Point has ones with wireless connection and SD card slots. If you want a record shop with easy digs and an expansive collection to slowly browse, Red Point is the place for you.

07 • Treasure At Home

(Photo: Jeff Tan)

The name of this store is quite on the nose, but I can’t think of a better way to describe this vintage shop.

I was having the time of my life exploring all the different retro furniture and thinking about where I would place it in my house. Not that I have my own house… but a girl can dream! Seriously though, if I ever get that BTO, I think I’ll do all my shopping here. From kitchenware to desks, posters, and signage, this place is a treasure trove of household goods 🪎

08 • The Panic Room SG

(Photo: Iain Smith)

The moment I walked in, I thought I got the address wrong, because in front of me were 3 guys getting their hair done. I remember backtracking and almost smacking my face into the glass door while trying to escape 😭

Turns out, I did have the right place, and The Panic Room records store happened to share the space with a barbershop. Cool! I got a good look at their collection, and it seemed to lean towards alternative music, so metal and punk fans will have a rockin’ time here. The barber I talked to said the store cuts hair for men and women, but I was too embarrassed by my entry attempt to ask more, so I left it at that. Maybe once I’m less shy (in 10 years time) I’ll try getting a trendy wolf cut 💇‍♀️💈

⏰ Opening hours: Daily, 10am – 10pm

09 • Takara House

This Japanese-inspired vintage store has been captivating Singaporeans and tourists on Instagram for its quaint ambience, quirky toy collection, and homely café.

Upon entering, I was greeted by a narrow stairwell lined with vintage pictures, signage, and toys perched precariously against the wall. Up the creaky stairs, I came face-to-face with numerous figurines from classic Japanese shows. A handful of Ultraman toys saluted me as I ordered some food at the counter and took a seat by the window. Around the room, multiple clothing racks groaned under the weight of vintage shirts, vests, and leather jackets. I easily spent 2 hours there, slowly drinking my tea and admiring the decor. In a nutshell, I adored the Studio Ghibli-esque setting, and I would totally come back 💞

‍

💸 What I got here: I got a Roselia Ripple ($7) and a Crème Brûlée Tart ($14). The lychee from the Ripple was a nice refreshing band-aid on my overheated body, and the brulee was a perfect balance of sweet and bitter.
