A few months back, every Singaporean citizen aged 18 and above received $100 in Culture Pass credits to enjoy local arts and heritage workshops. Personally, I used some of them to watch The Violinist in theatres. Y’all, I cried for like 15 mins straight at the final scene 😭 I was incredibly grateful to watch that movie for free, and it got me thinking: what other life-changing activities could I experience with my Culture Pass?
After doing a deep dive, I compiled some of the coolest/unique-est events for you all to use up your remaining credits on. Here’s to hoping we get $200 for our Culture Pass next year 🤩
01 • Singapore Comic Con

My eyes almost popped out of my skull when I saw this on the Culture Pass website. Do you know how long I’ve been trying to get tickets for this event?? I haven’t gone to Comic Con since Secondary school 😭 This year is all the more exciting since over 50 guests, ranging from acclaimed comic artists to distinguished actors, are coming. I will fight hordes of dweebs if it means getting the yellow Power Rangers actor’s signature. It’s every nerd for themselves 😤
📍 Address: Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention, 10 Bayfront Ave, Singapore 018956
⏰ Event hours: 10:30am – 8pm
🥳 Credit cost: 1-day ticket ($38), 2-day ticket ($68)

02 • The Spook-Out Day: Singapore Discovery Centre Puzzle Hunt

Don’t be fooled by the cute dinosaur mascot; this puzzle hunt is a lot more challenging than you think.
Test your ability to think outside the box and solve problems while learning about Singaporean history. There are some slightly darker events discussed, like the 1983 cable car incident, but Pepper the Dinosaur will provide emotional support through it 🦖 Fully air-conditioned with hints available for harder puzzles, it’s honestly a wonder my Dad hasn’t dragged the whole family here for bonding time.
📍 Address: Singapore Discovery Centre, 510 Upper Jurong Road, Singapore 638365
⏰ Event hours: Mon to Fri, 12pm – 6pm | Sat & Sun, 11am – 7pm

03 • Guided Peranakan Mini Tingkat Painting

Impress your colleagues with your own hand-painted mini tingkat next time you bring lunch to the office. Pick your favourite colours and go wild in this 2-hour workshop located less than 10 mins away from Aljunied station. Who needs a Gucci handbag when you can carry around a Gucci tingkat instead? (Gucci logo painted on separately)

⏰ Event hours: 1pm – 7pm

04 • How to Art with Friends

There are loads of ways to appreciate the finer things in life without rubbing your chin and pretending to be pensive in the gallery.
How to Art with Friends is about using unorthodox techniques to make art appreciation a little more fun. Make an emo Spotify playlist of a depressing display, or write poetry about how a stray squiggle resonates with your soul. I think paying $2 to learn how to mog your friends in art analysis is a pretty good deal 🤪
📍 Address: National Gallery Singapore, 1 St Andrew’s Road, Singapore 178957
⏰ Event hours: 10am – 7pm
🥳 Credit cost: $2

05 • Kampong Lorong Buangkok

Parents talk about “kampung spirit” all the time, but have they ever brought you to an actual one?
If you’ve got time, get them to put their Culture Pass where their mouth is and visit Singapore’s last surviving kampung together. Meet the village head, Ms Sng Mui Hong, and get first-hand tales of kampung life and the challenges of adapting to modern times. I think it would’ve been fun to live in simpler times, not gonna lie. Except the mosquitoes. I can’t deal with mosquitoes…
📍 Address: Kampong Lorong Buangkok, Lorong Buangkok, Kampong Lorong Buangkok, Singapore 547556
⏰ Event hours: Sun, 10am – 11:30am

06 • Bravery Through Toys

Toy Story, but everyone has PTSD. Too dark?
That’s the only way I can describe this entry because the exhibit explores how vintage toys were used as World War 2 propaganda. Both the Allied and Axis Powers had iconic heroes and infrastructure made into playthings to sway the masses; we might’ve done the same with Lim Bo Seng in a different lifetime 😭 If you’re into history and vintage objects, this 2-for-1 museum exhibit is right up your alley.
📍 Address: MINT Museum of Toys, 26 Seah Street, Singapore 188382
⏰ Event hours: Tues to Sun, 11am – 5pm

07 • Hawker Tales: From Roadside to Kopitiams to Michelin Stars

For those unaware, Singapore’s hawker centres are considered Intangible Heritage sites by UNESCO. What better way to explore the story behind these places than with like-minded foodies? Join this walking tour and embark on a yummy expedition from Golden Mile to North Bridge Road, ending at the only Michelin-starred hawker stall in Singapore. In the event organiser’s own words, come hungry and come curious 😋

08 • Bookbinding Workshops by Based Book Arts

I’ve got a bookworm friend who loooved this workshop, so obviously I had to include it here for y’all.
Based Book Arts is an independent creative workshop specialising in book arts and book making. Learn a variety of binding techniques like Japanese Stab Binding, Leather Binding, Long Stitch Binding, and more. I’m definitely using my new skills to bind my favourite fanfiction 👀 This is one of the pricier Culture Pass workshops, but it’s worth every cent (and credit) 💙

10 • FRAMED: Murder Mystery at National Gallery Singapore

Sorry to break it to y’all like this, but you’re all criminals 😕
Don’t shoot the messenger; I’m just passing on the info, but if you want to clear your name, here’s what you need to do: uncover the real murderer by exploring the National Gallery with WhatsApp. Solve puzzles, reveal secrets, and discover how art shapes truths into lies and lies into truth. Perform well, and you’ll be deemed innocent, but take one wrong step and you’ll be on a wild goose chase for life… or at least until the gallery closes for the day.
📍 Address: National Gallery Singapore, 1 St Andrew’s Road, Singapore 178957

11 • BattleBox Singapore

POV: it’s 1939, and you’re a builder who just completed the construction of a bunker for the upcoming war. Would it have crossed your mind that, decades later, your work would be transformed into a museum?
Battlebox is a bunker-turned-historical-site filled with Madame Tussauds-esque statues depicting the final days before the Fall of Singapore. Explore the subterranean tunnels with an immersive 40-minute audio guide and don complimentary 3-D glasses to compare Allied and Japanese perspectives on the battle 👓🔴🔵

12 • Affordable Art Fair

Before you ask, the official announcements state that all art pieces are priced below $15,000. I think the event organiser’s definition of ‘affordable’ is a little different from mine 😭
Regardless, the artworks are sourced from over 95 local and international galleries, so the quality and beauty are top-notch. If I could afford it, I’d get Lok Kerk Hwang’s ‘Crest Of Eternity’ ($1,500) or Yuttana Chompupuen’s ‘Cloud Reflection’ ($7,500). Do you guys think my boss will say yes if I ask for a salary raise?
📍 Address: F1 Pit Building, 1 Republic Boulevard, Singapore 038975
⏰ Event hours: Fri, 12pm – 10pm | Sat, 10am – 7pm | Sun, 10am – 7pm

13 • "Under One Roof" Character-Led Tour Experience

Nowadays it’s ‘larp’ this, ‘larp’ that; do y’all even know what LARP means? Live-Action Role Play (LARP) makes up the bulk of the ‘Under One Roof’ tour, so let the employees at Chinatown Heritage Centre show you how it’s really done.
Meet a Samsui Woman or a Chinese Coolie and watch an unforgettable character performance of life in 1950s Singapore. Ask the LARPers questions, learn about the rich history behind Singapore’s earliest immigrants, and end the tour with a complimentary dinner at Rise Bakehouse Heritage. Don’t let the Twitter and Instagram trolls fool you, real LARPers know ball 🔥

14 • Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum

Show of hands: how many of you knew that we have real dinosaur fossils in Singapore? If you didn't, this is your chance to see them up close for free.
Lee Kong Chian National History Museum houses not one, but THREE sauropod skeletons 🦕 They even have their own names: Apollonia, Twinky, and Prince. They are theorised to be part of the same herd, or even family 🥹 Besides fossils, the museum hosts a large collection of taxidermied animals, including a rare leatherback sea turtle and an endangered Sunda pangolin. It’s a fun trip through history, so hold onto your butts!
📍 Address: National University of Singapore, 2 Conservatory Drive, Singapore 117377
