Catching a movie in theatres is so much cooler than watching it on Netflix imo. Still, it’s hard to enjoy yourself when tickets and snacks in Singapore are so ex. If you’re itching for a film, why not watch one in Johor Bahru instead? With GetGo’s Drive to Malaysia feature, new and existing cinephiles can enjoy movies without burning a hole in their wallets. Check out our recommendations below for the best cinemas to chillax in while travelling abroad 🤙

01 • GSC KSL City

(Photo: GSC)

Unveiled in 2022 with 8 halls and a seating capacity of 1300+, KSL City’s GSC is one of the newer additions to the GSC franchise. This branch (sadly) only offers 2D screenings, but its close proximity to the border, cheap tickets (15RM/5SGD), and easy access to 100+ stores in the mall make this a popular choice for Singaporeans and Malaysians.

📍 Address: Level 2-128, KSL City Mall, 33, Jalan Seladang, Taman Abad, 80250 Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Opening hours: Daily, 10am – 11pm

02 • Womei Cineplex (Beletime Mall)

When I’m watching movies in Malaysia, I’m always on the lookout for 2 things: ticket prices and crowd levels. Womei ticks both boxes by offering relatively cheap tickets (17RM/5.50SGD) and a quiet and comfortable cinema. The last time I came here, I even got the entire hall to myself! If you’ve never experienced that in Singapore, you could always try your luck in JB 😉

📍 Address: Level 1, Beletime Shopping Mall, Persiaran Danga Perdana, Country Garden, Danga Bay, 80200 Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Opening hours: Daily, 10am – 11pm

03 • Blockbuster Cineplexes Pelangi Leisure Mall

Mileage charges aren’t an issue while driving with GetGo in Malaysia, but what about parking fees? If you’re catching a film in JB, consider going to Blockbuster Cineplexes in Pelangi Leisure Mall to enjoy free parking and convenient ground-floor access to the cinema. Their screening selections are somewhat limited, but it's still worth a look for the theatre’s cheap tickets (17RM), spacious halls, and wheelchair-friendly facilities.

📍 Address: Level 1, Pelangi Leisure Mall, Jalan Serampang, Taman Sri Tebrau, 80400 Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Opening hours: Daily, 10am – 12am

04 • TGV Cinemas Bukit Indah

(Photo: Arif Azinuddin)

TGV Cinemas offers a comfortable escape right in the heart of Johor Bahru. Conveniently located within the Bukit Indah shopping hub, film-goers can easily pair a movie with dinner or some last-minute sightseeing before driving home. Bringing along young children? Junior screenings are available with dimmer lights and softer audio for kids sensitive to loud environments.

🍿What I watched here: I watched the Chiikawa movie (18RM/6SGD) and my eyes were practically glued to the screen the entire time 🥰. Unfortunately, they didn’t have bean bag seats available for this film, so I’ll have to come back again to judge the comfiness of the bean bags 🤓

📍 Address: S01, Level 2, AEON Bukit Indah Shopping Centre, 8, Jalan Indah 15/2, Bukit Indah, 81200 Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Opening hours: Daily, 10am – 11pm

05 • Aurum Theatre

Your movie-watching experience shouldn’t be confined to cramped seating and mediocre food. So why not treat yourself in Malaysia? In Aurum Theatre, you can enjoy your movie while lying on luxury recliners, enveloped in nano-silver antibacterial covers, at just 80RM. Food is included in the ticket, so with 25SGD you’re essentially paying for: the luxury recliner, a fancy meal, a drink, and a movie screening. Is this what the kids call peak cinema?

🍿What I watched here: Did I pay over 100RM to watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day in a luxury suite? Yes. Would I do it again? Also, yes, but maybe without the chocolate brulee (25RM). Honestly, I was really worried about falling asleep mid-watch because of how comfy the recliner was 😭

📍 Address: Level 3, Persiaran Southkey 3, 81100 Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Opening hours: Daily, 10am – 12am

06 • GSC Dato’ Onn

(Photo: The Sun)

With just 5 halls and a seating capacity of 650+, this branch is smaller than others, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for with its top-of-the-line theatre equipment. Here, they have dynamic Dolby Atmos surround sound systems with insane audio quality on top of their GSC BIG experience, which involves a ginormous screen (20m width x 10m height), powered by a 4K laser projector. In simpler terms, it's a cinema hall that can blow your socks off 🔥

📍 Address: S-CN1, Level 2, Aeon Mall, No 3, Jln Dato' Onn 3, Bandar Dato Onn, 81100 Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Opening hours: Daily, 10am – 11pm

07 • GSC Sunway Big Box PlayPark

(Photo: GSC)

This cinema is technically on the border of JB and Iskandar Puteri, but I’m obligated to put it on the list for a really good reason: its playgrounds.

At GSC Playpark, there are twisty slides, colourful ballpits, and cushioned floors inside and outside the theatre halls, so children are encouraged to run (or roll) around and create a lively atmosphere. If you’re driving to Malaysia with rambunctious kids, GSC Playpark will welcome you and your family with open arms.

📍 Address: FF-L-06 & FF-L-07, Level 1, Sunway Big Box Retail Park, Persiaran Medini 5, 81550 Iskandar Puteri, Malaysia

⏰ Opening hours: Daily, 10am – 10pm

08 • FST Tasek Central

(Photo: Arun)

Tucked away in the town of Skudai, FST Tasek Central is a favourite among the locals. They’re not known for special screenings, but for their friendly and hospitable staff. One look at their Google reviews shows thousands of satisfied movie-goers praising the cinema staff and their people skills. On top of that, FST is also loved for its clean environment and lack of weekend crowds. Who doesn’t love stellar customer service and a quiet theatre?

🍿What I watched here: A friend recommended I watch the latest Insidious movie (15RM/5SGD). I didn’t think it was particularly scary, but getting to sit in a comfy seat and enjoy the air-con while mindlessly munching on popcorn was lowkey fun.

📍 Address: Lot 3-4, Level 4, Tasek Central, 2, Jalan Pendekar 16, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, 81300 Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Opening hours: Daily, 10am – 10pm
